when I use humor, I tend to turn it to irony. The humor without irony and the humor of irony are based on totally different things:
Humor comes from seeing a surprising side in a common thing, and irony from turning a common thing upside down, and make
the common itself seem as a surprise.

Humor for me means a tool to loose tension. I think that irony, in most cases, laughs at the receiver, also, so it's not the most effective
a tool to relax someone who is already tense. So, I think irony and the humor without irony work well, but in different situations.

Or what do you think?

humor is indeed a great way to loose tension and irony is good tool too, if the receiver understands the irony.
Both have their uses but with person I don't know very well I'll most likely go with humor, or at least I'll try to restrain the irony within me.
